Something I neglected to mention on the podcast last night was the crest/badge/brand reveal of the latest version of an Austin, Texas USL team, Austin Bold FC.
I don’t get the name at all, for starters. What “Austin, Texas” and “Bold” go together?
Was Captain Kirk from Austin? No, he was from Riverside, Iowa.
What about Guy Fieri, the Captain Kirk of Flavortown? No, he’s from California.
I don’t mean to say that Austin or Austinites aren’t bold, it’s just that they aren’t any more bold than anyone else. I know that for some reason soccer naming conventions are different from the standard “City name, animal” that we’re used to in college and professional sports. That’s fine. But that’s also how we got horrible names like Dallas Burn and Kansas City Wiz and Chicago Fire. I thought we learned from that and were sticking with “uh what do they do in England and Spain?” which was a little pedantic but okay. Nope, Austin said “we might get blown out of here in eighteen months by MLS and Anthony Precourt, so let’s just run with Jamie the Intern’s Fortnite-inspired name with the Austin City Limits motif and go get some damn cocktails.”
Oh well. Links!
- Rank the USL badges! I think ours is okay, but FCC fans are delusional if they think that giant FC belongs in the top ten, which tracks, I guess.
- Have you forgotten what’s going on with the red-shift in USL expansion? These guys will get you all caught up.
