I didn’t do a post-mortem on the New York game yesterday because last weekend kicked my ass. Last week kicked my ass. Losing to Pittsburgh, groundbreaking, O’Connor exiting, last second goal to draw the Red Bulls, overbearing Kentucky summer heatwave. It was a lot to take in.

So I’ll do an abbreviated version of my usual Centerback post just focusing on some numbers:

  • It’s hard to know just what to make of the “interceptions” statistic that Opta keeps, but 38-4 in favor of Louisville City seems pretty good.
  • City’s legs got the best of them toward the end of the game, and they gave up 15 corners on the night.
  • Morados only sent in ten crosses? That’s a bit fewer than usual. Red Bulls II had 29.
  • I thought Francis coming in as early as he did in the second half was a good move offensively, but hoped he’d produce a little bit more.
  • RB2 had 23 shots. That’s a lot of shots. This is the second game in three that City’s given up a concerning number of shot attempts. The good news is just four were on target, but three got in.
  • New York had more of the ball, and they had it in some dangerous areas pretty frequently. I’d show you the heat map, but I’m lazy and will just tell you that it’s redder on the City half than I’ve seen a heat map in a while.

The goals were pretty good. New York took advantage of some mistakes in the midfield (and are also pretty good). I’m not happy with yet another draw, but at least it wasn’t a loss. I was frankly pleased to see the guys play with as much energy and effort as they did, especially when they had lots of legitimate reasons not to. That’s probably more encouraging to me than anything else as we wade into this new chapter of coachlessness (new word!) and change.

The guys get a whole week this week to rest and recover, then we go to Tampa. They’re on their own bizzarro journey of a league season. Maybe we’ll win?
