Well, folks, the first month of the 2019 USL Championship season is in the books. I’d hoped Louisville City’s stunted start to the season would be left behind in March, but it doesn’t quite look like that’s happened yet. Because now we actually have to worry about what other teams in the league are doing, let’s take a (hopefully) brief look at what else is going on in the table:
- St. Louis FC. It’s officially bizzarro world in 2019 because not only is STLFC good, they’re in first. place. Unbeaten through five games, with four wins and a draw, including two pelts from some supposed title contenders in Indy XI and Nashville.
- Indy XI. Our brethren in the invention of soccer and history’s greatest rivalry of any kind, Indy XI tripped out of the gate with a loss against STL, but picked up some ground with consecutive wins against Charlotte and Hartford. They’ve only played three matches yet still sit a spot ahead of Louisville City in the table.
- Nashville SC. The Stop Signs are hardly worth worrying over since they’re gone after this year, but they’ve been a mixed bag, 2-1-1. They pounded Ottawa away 0-3 last weekend, which is quite the feat for a Gary Smith team.
- Baby Bulls. Doing what they do, being consistently dangerous in spite of fielding almost an entirely new roster of teenagers every season. Scored seven goals in three games. Le sigh.
- Memphis 901. I’m really glad these guys are in the league, if only because it seems like a fun road trip. They haven’t been playing very well, 1-2-2, but they’ve played a fairly tough schedule so far. Worth keeping an eye on.
- Still winless: Loudoun United, Swope Park Rangers, Charlotte Independence, and Hartford, who’s lost each of their five games so far. Yikes.
So, see, fans? It could be worse. It could also definitely be better. I’m no happier about City’s place among our Eastern Conference brethren than anyone else. But at least we aren’t Hartford?
