First and foremost: Yay, LouCity won their Open Cup match last night against Reading! Not gonna do a complete breakdown of the game because it was mostly one-way traffic and the numbers say what you think they might, but some highlights:

  • Elijah Wynder’s LouCity debut at 16 years old!
  • Other debutants include Geoffrey Dee at defensive midfield and Chris Hubbard’s first ever minutes for LouCity since he was signed in February 2018!
  • RICHARD BALLARD! He did Richard Ballard things!
  • A lot of guys got rest! That’s good!
  • Sunny went a full 90′ and crushed a free kick!
  • City only had one corner all game!
  • Reading had 17 interceptions, which is a lot!
  • 546 purple passes! Also a lot!
  • Nine of City’s eleven shots were on target!

It was a fun game to watch. On to Round 3, where City will host Birmingham Legion at Lynn Stadium on May 29 at 7pm.

Other fun stuff:

  • CharLOLotte Independence lost in their Open Cup match to an amateur team from south Florida called the Soccer Soldiers.
  • We’ll get to more of this later, but St. Louis had to go to penalties against Des Moines Menace to advance to their third round match last night.
  • Orange County SC (USL-C) lost in penalties to Orange County FC (IDK), in what I’m sure was a very difficult match to call for broadcasters.
  • In larger news, the USL announced a proposed rule change that it submitted to the International Football Association Board (IFAB) concerning concussion protocol and temporary substitutions. It’s a good and much needed step forward in addressing head injuries in soccer.
