Two of my kids are playing in soccer camp this week. My oldest is really earnest about soccer. He loves it, works hard, is very competitive. My younger son loves soccer, too, and wants really badly to be as good as his older brother. But he’s five, and the average eight year old who’s been playing for a while is generally pretty superior to the average five year old. My five year old is almost as big as my eight year old, but he obviously hasn’t played as much soccer. So, to make up for the lack of experience, he likes to tell me stories about how well he played every day when he comes home from camp. Yesterday he told me he scored three goals, one being a header and the other being a left footed flick-on from a corner kick. I’ve never seen a five year old score a header, mainly because most five year olds can’t kick the ball that high in the air. I’ve also never seen any five year old score from a corner. Suffice it to say I’m skeptical. The point, though, is I’m glad they’re having fun, and I’m really glad my five year old has such a vivid imagination.

- Voting is open for USL’s midseason awards. Because the awards are based on fan votes, we can expect a Cincinnati sweep, so this might be a waste of your time. Sean Totsch is nominated for defender, though.
- If you’re a stats and projections nerd, you’ll love this Philly Soccer Page article projecting MLS, USL and NWSL playoff odds using data through July 8. Louisville City’s doing pretty well in these projections, which is why I like them.
