I’ve been getting into debates on the internet lately. This is a very stupid idea. First, no one wins a debate on the internet. Second, no matter what happens, the other person generally thinks they won, no matter whether or not they’re right. That leads me to a larger point, which is the obsession with being right.
I went to law school for several reasons, one of which was so I could be smarter than other people and tell them they’re wrong. The problem with that was and is that there are lots of lawyers, some of whom are even smarter than I am. I know, who could have imagined?!?! Not me, that’s for sure.
The other fun part about being a lawyer is sometimes, even though you’re right, you can still lose because you’re bad at public speaking or making arguments. The law is so great! So, long story short, proving you’re right, which I do still enjoy doing, is kind of hollow. On brand!
Truth be told, though, once one figures out that there’s more value in DOING right than BEING right, life gets a little bit better. Not a lot better, because outside forces still can do a lot to determine happiness and all that. But DOING right at least makes you feel good about yourself with the added benefit of possibly helping others, where as just BEING right makes you kind of a smug a-hole.
