It’s March, y’all! March kicked off in typical March fashion with a day that started below freezing and ended near 70 degrees. I’m betting on a freak blizzard in a week or so, followed by a sand storm.
UK 1-2 Louisville City
Louisville City survived an early goal in their last preseason friendly of 2020 to beat the Wildcats on a cold Saturday night in Lexington. Kentucky went up on City early thanks to a goal from Kalil El Medkhar, the same guy that scored on City in last season’s friendly.
Cameron Lancaster evened things up with an incredible free kick, and Niall McCabe hit another for the game winner in the second half.
John Hackworth wasn’t particularly pleased with the team’s effort for most of the match, but was glad for the experience and the result:
All in all, it felt like a good preseason for City. Let’s hope that translates over to OMG THE SEASON OPENER IS THIS WEEKEND HOLD ME
Soccer Holdings gets committee approval to build training complex at Champions Park, awaits full Metro Council vote
Soccer Holdings’ plans to build a new training complex for its NWSL side and academy took another step forward last Thursday. Louisville Metro Government’s Parks and Sustainability committee passed a resolution last Thursday to allow Soccer Holdings to lease a portion of the field complex on Edith Avenue.
A few committee members expressed some concern about one group or club monopolizing the facility. “We’re not motivated to tie ourselves with one group or one organization,” Estes responded. “We want multiple groups to be coming through that facility, so we’ll put it on paper.” The proposal itself says that utilization of the youth fields would be managed in a way that gives “equitable utilization of said fields from a scheduling and operational standpoint.” That includes not just soccer but also field hockey and lacrosse.
This is a big step in Soccer Holdings’ ability to identify and develop players. Let’s hope the plan also opens up new opportunities for kids that have the ability and desire to play, but haven’t had the access yet. This is a big deal for SH. Fingers crossed for the Council’s final vote, which may come as early as this Thursday night.
