Dire news for those hoping we’d be back to playing soccer in April: USL Championship announced that it was extending its season suspension up to at least May 10 in compliance with guidance from the CDC. Whether that will effect play in League Two and LouCity’s U23 team remains in the air. The USL’s inaugural Academy Cup National Event has been straight-up canceled.
The President’s recent admonition to avoid gatherings of more than ten people has had and will still probably have an effect on the senior team’s ability to practice and play together. Obviously, staying in close contact with teammates and staff has to take a back seat to the importance of social distancing right now. We all need to do our part to slow and reduce the spread of COVID-19, and the club is doing their part.
Whenever things actually calm down, it’s likely the USL, along with sports leagues worldwide, will have to start preseason all over again to get their athletes back in game shape. We really don’t know when that will be, either. The safest option will be “when there’s a vaccine available,” but that’s not for another 18 months, probably. Maybe when we know that we’re on the other side of the infection bell curve? Who makes that call? I’m glad it’s not me.
Once again, in the absence of live soccer, we can still resort to YouTube to get our fix. Today’s match is the Sean Reynolds “FIVE” game against FC Cincinnati from 2017, a classic:
Enjoy, stay safe out there and VAMOS MORADOS!
