Well, folks, I said yesterday we were due for a busy news week here at the old Louisville Coopers dot com. That was not true on Monday, however. The USL news tap was equally dry. Meanwhile, nuestros Morados are in Florida training with what I have to assume is a big enough squad to hold a full on scrimmage.
A full-on scrimmage would require at least 22 players. There are only 19 on the roster. That means there’s some folks down there we don’t know about. WHO ARE THEY? What do they know? Do they know things? Let’s find out!
But before we get too wrapped up in conjecture, let’s recap what’s happened so far in LouCity-land this offseason:
- The club brought back 16 players from the 2019 squad
- Then they signed Corben Bone and Jimmy Ockford
- There was a new crest
- Then there wasn’t
- James O’Connor came back, but to the front office
- Danny Cruz was named technical director
- Someone spilled the beans about a U23 team
- Then the club confirmed the existence of said U23 team
- Then Mario Sanchez was announced as coach of said U23 team
- We found out when the first game at the new stadium would be
- Then we found out there was going to be a different game before the first game at the new stadium
- City announced they were playing in a preseason tournament in Utah
- We found out from other places that there were two other preseason games on the books in Florida
- Howie Lindsey said on Saturday there are even more preseason games than the five we already know about
- People complained about at least 50% of the items on this list
That’s a pretty decent list. It’s not quite enough to keep a Purple Press running every weekday, but it’s moved us along right into the preseason. Yeah, I’d like to know about how the roster is going to round out. Yes, I want more details about the U17s, like a roster and how the Academy Cup side is or isn’t going to dovetail into the club’s larger developmental aspirations. The U23 stuff probably won’t be knowable until probably May when most colleges are out of session, so I’m okay to put a pin in that.
But what about a coach for the NWSL team? Or are we going to wait to see how things shake out after the 2020 season is over? That would make the runway awfully short going into 2021 so I doubt that’s the plan. But maybe it is? And I haven’t even tried to dig into NWSL roster rules to see if there’s any steps the club can take to form the beginnings of a roster before an expansion draft and the other, “normal” draft that happens in January next year. Ugh.
We could always be like Charlotte Independence, without enough signed players to even field a team and slowly counting down the days to our impending doom. That would suck much more. So I guess I’ll live with what we’ve got and maintain my simmering excitement about coming developments on the senior, youth, and women’s sides of Louisville City and Soccer Holdings, LLC. But it won’t be easy.
Anyway, VAMOS MORADOS.
