Louisville City draws Union Omaha 1-1 at Wasatch Winter Cup

The headline says it all. Abdou Mbacke Thiam scored a penalty for Morados in the first half, and Dami Viader did the same for Omaha in the second. The lineups for City:

I’m a little interested that trialist Cory Thomas was playing left back or something in that general area, but otherwise nothing particularly unusual.

Second half:

I’m not ready to say there’s a clear delineation between first and second team here. Probably not. But how Akil Watts and Napo Matsoso worked with this group is something I would have liked to watch.

Hack’s postgame thoughts:

He doesn’t sound particularly enthused about this match. The good news is it’s preseason, nothing’s set in stone, and results don’t actually matter. That’s why you play these games: to figure out your strengths and weaknesses and learn how to play to the former and hide or improve the latter.

Next up is the final match against Real Monarchs. City can win the cup with a result as long as Omaha doesn’t score a bunch of goals on Switchbacks in their final match, but a win in the rematch of last year’s Championship Final would be nice. Let’s do that.

Other news:

  • Now that Cincinnati is once again without a manager, John Hackworth’s name came up on a list of potential candidates for the open job. So did James O’Connor, which I found very interesting given their fans’ general dislike for the Irishman. While both are definitely capable of filling the role, I get the impression City’s staff are committed to the cause here in Louisville. Plus, FCC is the worst. Their track record of firing or losing managers doesn’t make that job particularly attractive, to say nothing of the fact that their season stars in two weeks and they’ve got a bunch of new players that aren’t used to each other yet. Good luck with that, Knifey Soccer Lions.
  • Memphis 901 signed former Evertonian Jose Baxter for 2020.
