US Soccer announced the pairings and host scenarios for the Second Round of the US Open Cup this afternoon. That’s a bit of a confusing sentence, for sure, but here’s why: The first round hasn’t been played yet. The winner of the first round matchups determines the dates and locations of the second round matchups. Why wouldn’t those dates and places already be finalized? IDK, it’s US Soccer and its least favorite thing: soccer.
Louisville City will be paired with the winner of the first round matchup between the internet’s second favorite soccer team, Kingston Stockade FC, and the legendary Long Island Rough Riders. If Stockade win, Louisville City will play visitors up in Poughkeepsie, New York, a city name that is super fun to say. If Rough Riders win, then Morados host over at Woehrle Field in Jeffersonville. I don’t know why the winner of the first round match determines the location of the game, or why Louisville City is somehow considered a Northeast team. I’m guessing either or both has to do with capacity to host the game and/or a coin flip.
Kingston Stockade and Long Island Rough Riders play on May 8 or 9, and probably won’t be streamed online. We’ll let you know on the twitters if that changes.
