It’s all right there in the title, y’all. Phil Durbin again scooped the hell out of everyone else and was tweeting about this deal on Saturday night. If there was money to be made in lower division soccer journalism (there isn’t!), Phil would be worth every penny/bitcoin he was paid.
Anyway, this is about a new player, not Phil’s unparalleled under-the-radar player transaction reporting abilities. Jose Carranza was, until today, a free agent midfielder, having played most recently for A T L U T D 2 on a (very) short term contract earlier in the season. Previously, Carranza was part of DC United’s academy setup, and inked his first professional contract with North Carolina FC in 2017. I don’t think he was under contract with anyone when he was signed; his option was declined by Atlanta back in late June or July. Carranza is a US Soccer youth product, most recently playing with the US U18s, which explains how John Hackworth was able to find him so quickly.
So how about his game? I have no idea. He’s a midfielder, maybe of the defensive variety. He’s not very tall. But he’s young and seemingly very hungry. So let’s welcome Jose to Louisville!
