Louisville City just announced that the club has signed former Richmond Kickers midfielder Brian Ownby for the 2017 season. And beyond? Who knows!?!
Ownby was a regular starter for Richmond in his three plus seasons there, and also had stints with the Houston Dynamo in MLS as well as the Pittsburgh SadDogs. While not a prolific goalscorer, he at least keeps defenses on their toes, as he registered 54 shots last season, 26 on target. Ownby sees himself as a guy who’s able to take on defenders with the ball and open up space for the forward line with crosses and through-balls, something Louisville City will need in the absence of Magnus Rasmussen.
I’m admittedly unsure whether this is the #10 replacement we’re looking for. Richmond generally plays a traditional 4-4-2, so Ownby’s role often switched between defense and attack. However, Elsie’s attacking midfield could use some fresh blood, and this is it. Ownby will probably also be able to provide some locker-room leadership, something O’Connor is probably looking for with Aodhan Quinn’s permanent departure from the team.
Let’s welcome Brian Ownby to the team and to Louisville. COME ON, CITY!
