Louisville City confirmed yesterday the season-long loan of goalkeeper Ben Lundt from the hated FC Cincinnati. Lundt, a recent graduate from Akron, was Cindy’s 37th overall pick in the recent MLS SuperDraft, but found himself behind a goalkeeping roster that could be described as Philadelphian. Alan Koch, to his credit, recognized the logjam he had at keeper and sent him down to us so we could make him better than Spencer Richey.
Lundt is the first-ever German to play for Louisville City, having grown up in Berlin and playing in Hertha BSC’s academy before coming stateside to play at Akron. Das ist großartig! He was pretty awesome in goal for the Zips, picking up clean sheets in nearly half of his 60 appearances, and making the College Cup final last season. Ausgezeichnet!
Nonetheless, he’ll probably struggle for playing time with Tim Dobrowolski and Chris Hubbard in front of him in the roster. That said, we wish him the best, even if he is technically an FC Cincinnati player.
About that.
Look, I don’t like the idea of taking players on loan from FCC any better than anyone else does. They started the “you’ll be our 2 team!” banter more than a year ago, and moves like this feed that idiot troll fire.
However, from a practical standpoint, there’s no reason why Louisville City shouldn’t take talented players on loan because a) roster depth and b) we don’t have to pay their salary.
There’s no denying that taking on James Sands and USMNTer Jonathan Lewis for short stints last season was impactful. If Louisville City can prove that it’s a talent-development factory that also wins trophies, that’s attractive to players and coaches from bigger leagues, and possibly result in a talent advantage for Morados in the process that costs the club close to nothing. Win-win-win, right?
But still, FC Cincinnati is gross.
Wilkommen and Viel Glück to Ben Lundt!
