New York soccer blog Once a Metro reported today that midfielder Speedy Williams will be joining Team Purple for 2017. Daniel Feuerstein published the original story, which was confirmed by Jake Evans via direct quote from Williams himself.
City fans will probably remember Williams for picking up a red card less than five minutes after entering the Eastern Conference Championship this past season during extra time. While that was probably a forgettable appearance, Williams was a very important player in RB2’s championship run in 2016. He’s a ball winner and a distributor with some real bite, something Louisville City could use since Juan Guzman left.
Louisville City itself hasn’t commented on the rumor yet. It is expected, however, as soon as the ball drops on 2017, the club will start announcing new player signings en masse. While Speedy Williams doesn’t address City’s more glaring roster holes at the moment (e.g., a left footed player of any kind, a central attacking midfielder, or a hold-up center forward), this guy is a good player that can free our other mids up to press forward in possession. Let’s all welcome Speedy to Louisville!
