WHO, AGAIN?
When we last met FCC, we handed the Blorange their worst ever loss and saw them limp into the playoffs only to suffer yet another first-round defeat. For better or worse, Cincy replaced the bulk of their roster during the offseason, jettisoning their leading goalscorer/face-biter Djiby Fall and all-league defender (despite the fact that his unit gave up more than 45 goals in 2017) Harrison Delbridge. They also added and then subtracted NASL’s Golden Boot winner in 2017, Tommy Heinemann during the offseason.
This season, thus far, FCC has played two matches away and won them both, beating nemesis Charleston Battery and Indy Eleven without conceding once. It’s too early in the season to make any firm judgments, but it doesn’t look like they play too much from the wings, crossing the ball only 16 times so far. So this might be one of those games that’s won in the midfield, as so many of them are. Richie Ryan and Kenney Walker are what held things together for FCC the last two matches, but Walker suffered a pretty bad injury at the hands of Jack McInerney last match, so who pairs with him tonight is a mystery. Corben Bone has been playing the 10 role somewhat so far, though it seems like he’s played so close to forward Emery Welshman that they almost cancel each other out. Bone’s only created one scoring chance in 180 minutes so far, too, so maybe they haven’t quite worked out how the offense is supposed to, well, work just yet.
That said, there’s something to be said for the defensive solidity FCC’s displayed thus far, especially in light of Indy XI’s purported firepower (that’s only produced one goal so far this season).
This is setting up to be a chess match of a game. Whereas in the past the Dirty River Derby has turned into a high-scoring affair, these two teams thus far have been much more defensive and judicious in their attacking moves. We Morados fans should feel pretty good about our team after beating a very good Tampa Bay team last week, but that doesn’t make this edition of the Dirty River Derby any less of a nailbiter. I’m still pretty excited, and feel pretty good about City’a chances of taking home some points tonight.
VAMOS MORADOS, VAMOS A GANAR!
