US Soccer rolled out the format for the 2017 U.S. Open Cup yesterday. Louisville City, along with the rest of the eligible USL and NASL clubs, will enter the tournament in the second round, set to take place on May 17. The second round winners will play again in the third round on May 31, and then MLS teams join the fray in Round 4 on June 14.
We are also happy to note that Derby City Rovers qualified for an at-large spot this year, and they’ll play in Round 1 on May 10! I can’t recall, but I think this may be DCR’s first ever U.S. Open Cup appearance. If the Rovers advance out of Round1, it’s possible (and pretty likely) that Louisville City would face them in the second round. Teams are generally paired geographically through the first four rounds of the tournament.
